While the US, Turkey and their allies claim to battle ISIS, they are currently sitting back and watching as ISIS attacks autonomous Kurdish territories in northern Syria. Turkey has tanks parked just miles away but refuses to intervene, and indeed is restricting the movement of Kurds across the border. It is very clear that they are hoping ISIS will take care of their Kurdish problem for them. Essentially, they are aiding and abetting genocide while claiming to oppose ISIS. In 2013, Kurdish, Arab and Christian leaders in Rojava (Kurdish region of Syria) proclaimed it an autonomous, democratic, self-governing region committed to anti-imperialism, anti-capitalism and gender equality. We should ask ourselves why this is never mentioned in discussions of bringing democracy to the Middle East. The Kurds did not need us to bring democracy—they built it. But apparently thats not the kind of democracy we like.
