While the alarm has been raised about the walrus population in Alaska, a reality check finds that in Russia and Norway, the walrus population is exploding because hunting bans are protecting them and global warming isnt harming them... its actually increasing their breeding populations. adn/article/20141009/norway-rapid-growth-svalbard-walrus-population Numerous articles about the hunting of walruses reveals that the walrus population in Alaska has been decimated by overhunting and the fact they are now massing in larger populations makes them in extremely greater danger of being hunted. Even many environmentalists are talking about a need to thin the herds a bit because they are massing in areas theyve never been seen in. I was watching this story presented on PBS where native Alaskans addressed the matter pointing out its not the first time this has happened as there have been years in the past where their ancestors recorded no Winter and the warmth caused the ice packs to melt away forcing the walrus to do what they are doing now. But, in the past, this actually caused a larger population of walrus because such great numbers allowed greater defense. One of the primary reasons the walrus population is managed is the fact that on the pack ice, they tend to live in small numbers making them easier prey for polar bears. Thus, their greater numbers represent a greater ability for the big bulls and sows to defend their young. Like the stories about the polar bears being in trouble when their numbers are actually exploding as they are forced further inland, the real threat to the walrus population entering this new age are humans hunting them... not global warming. Do the research people... I shouldnt have to do it for you and Im not going to post link after link after link to people who are damn well intelligent enough to check what I am saying and find the answers for themselves. Its what I do when Richard Sears or someone else says something Ive never heard before and the only time I ask them for a source is if I cannot find the right keywords to find it for myself. Use your heads as the threat to walruses is overhunting and if you do even a few minutes research, youll find their numbers have been declining because people have been killing too many of the breeding animals so that many of the sows arent even breeding because too many of the bulls have been killed. The killers are also killing the sows leaving the offspring to fend for themselves when they arent developed well enough to do that. People trying to raise alarms for years to get help and ban walrus hunting have failed. So, seeing this opportunity, they are trying to get some attention to their cause... and theyll tell you what the real threat is if you ask them because its humans killing these animals thats the only real threat here.
