While this page predominantly focuses on endemic species, all bird behaviour is intriguing... Corvids and parrots have long been known for their intelligence and reasoning ability, but members of the family Turdidae are also smart - not at the same level granted, but more so than they often receive credit for. I have now been witnessing a male blackbird stealing cat food (said cat is heavily loaded with bells, controlled and does not belong to me) at a precise daily time over a long period. It knows the cats exact feeding schedule and acquires its food accordingly (when the cat is out of reach). This blackbird has inadvertently taught a clutch of recently fledged song thrushes (a close relation) to copy its exact behaviour. The thrushes join the blackbird at the correct time each day, lining up nicely, watching, then taking their turn once the blackbird has finished feeding. They even warn each other with alarm calls, interspecies altruism perhaps. Have you encountered cunning avian intelligence in your garden or neighbourhood? - Sabrina
