Whilst this catchy instrumental wasnt a Top 40 hit, it will be very familiar to those who remember Weekend Magazine, after the Sunday 7pm ABC TV news, in the late 60s through the early 80s. It DID receive turntable action from some Australian stations and I remember buying the single as a kid in 1967. After a lot of searching in 2007 I finally picked up the album from which the single came. Its titled Brass In The Night and Im actually playing it as I type. UK Composer/Band Leader Tony Osborne moved to Manly in Sydney in his senior years and was the featured pianist at The Sydney Yacht Club. In January 2008 out of interest and genuine curiosity, I finally secured Tonys phone number with the assistance of his son, Gary Osborne. Gary (amongst many other music accomplishments) wrote Blue Eyes with Elton John. Long story short, Tony was a delightful, humble human being who was chuffed that I had gone to the trouble of tracking him down from South Australia and had interest in his musical career. He wasnt actually aware of the Weekend Magazine connection, as by the time he arrived in Australia the feature was long gone off the TV. I spoke to Tony Osborne on a warm January 7 2008. As things turned out, I only recently learned he passed away on March 1st 2009. I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to speak with him and to tell him how much Sunspot meant to me growing up in Sydney. My notes on my YouTube contribution also highlight the giants of music who Tony Osborne worked with. Enjoy this great memory...
