Whisper had a great pack walk today. Talk about trial by fire... there were 13 other dogs on the pack walk and a bunch of new people, including 2 tall men. She did so well and although she was shy and a little skittish at first, it didnt take long before she was sniffing butts and rolling with the gang. We had the GoPro rolling, but heres some footage I recorded with my phone. You may notice that Whisper doesnt have a tail. She was a stray found roaming on a reserve in Alberta when she was rescued and then adopted out through the SPCA. Her owner explained that the vet said it was not a docking and he wasnt sure what had happened to her tail. She hadnt heard of a cull so I explained that there may be an explanation for her missing tail. In some northern communities culls are used to reduce or control the size of the stray dog population. Since stray, intact dogs roam free, they multiply over time and communities are often overun with new litters of dogs. A cull is called when the population gets to be a problem. Essentially, it is open season on stray dogs and money is paid for each tail brought in. Rescue groups and veterinarians are working with these communities to help with spay and neuter clinics and before a cull happens rescuer workers often work with the community leaders to go in and remove as many dogs as they can save and adopt them into homes. It could be that Whispers life was spared but her tail was taken, however, no one knows for certain. She is not a very confident dog and she has some resource (food) guarding issues with other dogs but is fine with food around people. Well be working on those things and putting her through obedience training. We started marker training tonight and this afternoon I was running her through crate training. Since she can be skittish with men we are both going to work on her training together. She will need to be vetted as she is not current on vaccinations and may also have an ear infection. Any donations towards her vetting are greatly appreciated and can be made through our website. Thank You : )
