Who Should See a Chiropractor? By Kevin Donka, D.C. One day a while back when I opened up my Facebook page, there was a question from a student I have taught in one of our local high school drumlines. The question he asked was, “What constitutes the need for an adjustment?” What follows is the exact answer I posted for him on Facebook this morning. Thats a great question, Chris, and one that the overwhelming majority of people have been misinformed about. I will try not to make this too long, but I want you to understand as completely and as simply as possible. First, please allow me to explain that no part of your body works the way it should unless there is a clear neurological connection between it and your brain. And, the body cannot work as harmoniously as a whole as it was designed to if all of the parts are not fully connected through your brain and nerve system. So heres the thing; your spinal cord runs INSIDE of and is attached to your spine in many places, plus the spinal nerves that feed the rest of the body, exit the spine between each pair of vertebrae. So, if you lose alignment or function ANYWHERE in your spine, it is very likely that it will also affect the integrity of your brain body connection to some degree. It will probably affect it most wherever the specific loss of function is in the spine, but because the entire nerve system is connected, it also affects EVERY part of your nerve system in some way as well. And if it affects every part of your nerve system to some degree, it affects every part of your body to some degree as well. Next, we chiropractors understand that you were designed and built to be healthy - that HEALTH is your NATURAL STATE - that Normal Function = Health. So, if WE can help you get back your function, then YOU can get back your health. And so, our goal is NOT to diagnose, treat, cure or even prevent ANY specific problem, illness or injury. No, as we said, if WE can help you get back your function, YOU can get back your health. Its kind of like the phrase, the rising tide raises all boats. Our one and only goal is to help your whole spine work better, so that your whole nerve system works better. And when your whole nerve system works better, your whole body and your whole mind work better. Of course, to be truly healthy, you must also have a positive focus and a healthy lifestyle. But our one and only goal is to make sure that everyone is as clearly connected as possible. So, what constitutes the need for an adjustment? Any loss of function or alignment in your spine (which very often does not produce symptoms - or, at least, not right away). And how do you KNOW if you need an adjustment? The only way to know for sure is to get checked. Thats why we say EVERYONE should get checked periodically by a chiropractor - to make sure you have the best possible chance of being your best. :)
