Wolf Management Should Not Be in States Hands; Safe Zone Needed - TopicsExpress

Wolf Management Should Not Be in States Hands; Safe Zone Needed Around Yellowstone National Park Janet Hoben / Ravalli Republic / October 6, 2014 In regards to the article, “Federal judge won’t give Wyoming control of wolves,” I say it’s about time. My only regret is that, of the states where wolves have been removed from the Endangered Species Act, Wyoming is the only state wherein a judge has ruled that the state did not have a reasonable management plan. “Management plan,” for those who didn’t know, is a euphemism for killing wolves. In the states where delisting has occurred, there has not been once case where it has meant anything else. The delisting of wolves in the Rocky Mountain states was not the result of any science proving that wolf populations had recovered enough to warrant being removed from the ESA. Rather, this delisting was the result of a rider that was attached to a budget bill by a few members of Congress who were clearly doing the bidding of some of their wolf-hating constituents. The rest of Congress could basically do nothing about it because they could not afford to not pass the budget. The public did not get to weigh in on this. The scientific community did not get to weigh on this. Conservation groups did not get to weigh in on this. It was simply the result of some back-room politics. Is this how we run our country now? Where the wishes of a few groups with tons of money are able to take precedence over the rest of the American population? The majority of Americans support wolf recovery! At least, for now, there will be more protections for our valuable Yellowstone wolves. Since delisting, several well-known and beloved wolves have been killed because they stepped over an invisible boundary signifying the end of park limits. Because, you know, wolves can’t read maps. And the penalty for that ignorance has been death. Hopefully, if and when wolf hunting again becomes legal in Wyoming, a safe zone will be established around the park that will protect wolves which belong to all Americans.
