Who do you think said this? Do you agree? “The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence.” This is my all-time favorite quote. I want to look back on my career and life and be satisfied that I spent my time pursuing goals with a passion for excellence and a determination to achieve the most of my ability – both for me and the organization I lead. And yes, that means having extremely high standards and pushing your team hard because you know they can achieve amazing things if the bar is set high. “Individual commitment to a group effort – that’s what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” It’s so rewarding to see a team of talented people pull together to achieve a result that was otherwise deemed impossible. A strong sense of team is so critical to achieving great things. Having that group of individuals join together to embrace a shared mission, appreciate each other’s unique contribution to the effort and then executing the heck out of the opportunity – now that’s poetry in motion! “In great attempts, it’s glorious even to fail.” This applies to both teams and individuals. No one has achieved uncommon results by staying in their comfort zone their whole career. Take smart risks, jump on the opportunities that present themselves, and encourage your people to do the same. They will embrace the mission and work that much harder if they know they’re empowered to break new ground. Of course, with risk comes failure. It’s not whether you fail that truly tests the mettle of an organization, it’s what you do – or don’t do – after the failure. Occasional failure is a necessary part of lasting business progress as long as we learn from the insights of that failure. The determination to succeed, coupled with hard work, disciplined execution, a smart strategy, a team environment and the willingness to push the envelope is the winning formula.
