Who has a fuel bill of over £3,000 in East Devon? Well East Devon M.P. Hugo Swire clocked up a fuel bill of £3198 on gas and oil in his second home in East Devon making him eighth highest claimant of MPs in a list published by the Daily Mirror (we wonder if he will rise higher when the electric bill comes in !) Mr Swire told a local newspaper, “The reason we are not introducing a price freeze is it simply won’t work. If we want the lights to stay on, consumers and taxpayers are, by some means or other, going to have to pay for it.” Well he has found his way hasnt he. Mr Swire is no stranger to extravagant claims having previously claimed more for a Burberry laptop cover than many would pay for a laptop, and multiple digital cameras. On top of his basic MPs salary of £66,396 he receives an additional allowance for his Foreign Office post, and expenses to cover running an office, staff and travel. He also employs his wife in some capacity. One has to wonder how you clock up a gas and oil bill of over £3,000 in a year. Is everything left on so that he doesnt have to get a sweater out when he first arrives back in the constituency for the weekend? Has he taken any steps to reduce the fuel bill, the steps we are supposed to take? If that is average for similar properties, why have we not heard him raising the issue for his constituents in the same situation? Does he really still assert that we are all in this together?
