Who has the keys of the Kingdom of God? What does it mean Keys of the Kingdom of God? Does only some church or church leader have these keys? Did only Peter or the apostles had these keys? Are these keys in the safe custody of some church? These famous words were spoken by Jesus to Peter, when he declared Jesus “Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matt. 16:16-19). Jesus also added “whatsoever thou shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Here Peter expressed the truth which is the foundation of the Kingdom of God. Jesus honors him as the representative and leader of the body of believers. Now Peter is dead and the apostles are dead. Some churches claim that they have the apostolic continuity from Peter and their leader is the direct descendant in the line of Peter having the keys of the Kingdom of God. Whatever it is, our question is whether any church leader or church can prevent somebody from entering the heaven, if a person sincerely repents and accepts Christ? Another question is whether we can have these keys of the Kingdom of God? This question is especially true when every layman or believer is called royal priesthood by God. “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9) In reality the keys of the kingdom of heaven are the words of Christ. These words have power to open or shut heaven. We are just the messengers conveying these words. They declare the conditions upon which men are received or rejected. If accepted the doors of heaven are opened, and when rejected the doors of heaven are closed. Thus the acts of those who preach these words become an instrument of life unto life or of death unto death. Their mission is weighted with eternal results. As the Father commissioned Jesus, so Christ commissions His believers. Through the Spirit, the Father invested Christ with divine power. Through the Spirit, Jesus likewise invests His followers with divine power commensurate with their earthly assignments. No disciple should fear that Christ has given them less power. Every skill, talent, capability, and strength needed has been supplied for the spread of His Kingdom.
