Who is Gary Young? A few years back we were sitting around the dinner table with Gary at the YL Highland Flats tree farm in Idaho (reforestation time!). We were just gabbing like a family and friend get together. Gary shared with us that he did not learn to read or write until he was in his 20’s, when he was in the hospital after his logging accident and coming to terms with the medical diagnosis of spending the rest of his life in a wheel chair. His hospital roommate suggested they take turns reading the bible to each other in the evening. Gary agreed and invited his hospital roommate to start… every night. Then Gary would “fall asleep” by the time it was his turn to read. The night nurse noticed this pattern and called Gary on it, and then offered to teach Gary to read. Along with reading came writing. Gary continued to improve himself, in every area of his life. Did he have bad days? You betcha. Did he give up? There were times when he thought about it. But he didn’t. Look at all he has accomplished up to today. Quite a role model. When life seems to be way more difficult than you can handle, and nothing and no one seems to be working in your favor, that’s when you look to your chosen role model and think, “If he can do all this, I can surely accomplish this one thing today.” It’s that never quit attitude, and continual self-improvement. Who’s your role model?
