He just turned 50, is a student of and played for Marcelo Bielsa, never coached outside South America, is from Rosario, managed the Paraguayan national team and most recently did a sterling job at Newell’s Old Boys. Why he works ? There are no doubts about where his ideas come from: Marcelo Bielsa. And effectively Bielsa’s system comes down to pace and pressing. It is conducted at high speeds and with constant intensive pressure. The players necessary for this system to thrive require oodles of stamina and intelligent tactical discipline. Barça thankfully fits the bill here.At Newell’s Tata employed a 4-1-4-1 which effectively is a 4-3-3. The defensive midfielder role is extremely important. He begins the transition forward and provides cover when defending, slotting between the center backs to create a more protective 5-4-1. In Sergio Busquets, Tata couldn’t find a more suitable man to perform that role. But while Tata is a Bielsa student, he is his own man. He is reportedly also a more gentle and approachable man manager. Bielsa’s manic and obsessiveness often becomes too much to handle. #GA
