Who is Lord Smith of Kelvin? Name : Robert Haldane Smith Title : Baron Smith of Kelvin Born : 8th August 1944 in Glasgow School : Allan Glen’s School, Glasgow Smith began training as an accountant with Robb Ferguson & Co. upon leaving school in 1963. He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1968. In a rather dubious business career, Smith held high positions within The Bank of Scotland, RBS, MFI, Network Rail and other businesses that failed. He also served with the Financial Services Authority during the period that the banks were so unregulated that they ultimately became bankrupt. In 2008, he was appointed as the chair of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and in 2012, he became chair of the Green Bank. He has served on other boards, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants Scotland and the National Museums Scotland. Lord Smith is married with 2 daughters and lives on the Isle of Inchmarnock. He has been conferred honorary degrees from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Paisley Universities. He is a life peer and sits as a cross bencher in The Lords. In spite of the fact most of his education qualifications are honorary, his business career is patchy and his income tends to come from posts he has been handed, rather than achieving by commitment and hard work, I am sure he will be fine with the future of our country.
