Who is Responsible? When the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Doug - TopicsExpress

Who is Responsible? When the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Doug Griffiths was asked to comment about concerns raised by Danielle Smith, the leader of the Official Opposition, regarding the forced entry into homes and the seizure of property by the RCMP during last June’s flooding. He told the press, “I am sick and tired of people like her [Danielle Smith] going around trying to blame people when we’re still trying to rebuild the community. It’s f---ing embarrassing.” Yes Griffiths’ comments are rude and unprofessional, however they are also reflective of a tired arrogant political party that doesn’t think it should be held accountable. Why shouldn’t our government be held accountable to the very same standards that apply to all Albertans? Shouldn’t the laws apply equally to everyone? Nearly two thousand homes in High River suffered damage during the flood as police went door to door breaking into homes to seize private property. In many cases secured homes were rendered unsecure for days, and weeks, after police smashed down doors and left homes wide-open for potential looters. The RCMP is suggesting that the province should pay for the damages, and now Alberta’s PC government wants the RCMP to pay for the damages. What’s missing in this debate is, who gave the order to break into homes under the pretense of an emergency response? As of this date numerous excuses have been given to justify breaking into homes, but these excuses do not pass the smell test. They appear to be just excuses! Griffiths is famous for saying there is just one taxpayer, but now the government he represents wants the RCMP to pay for the damage caused by kicking doors down. Does Griffiths now believe there is some other taxpayer that funds the RCMP? This PC government wants the public to believe it respects property rights. Numerous cabinet ministers, including Griffiths, have made public announcements to the effect, “We will never seize your property without due process. We are property owners too.” As High River homeowners, with house keys in hand, learned from a distance, this PC government’s assurances splinter faster than it takes to kick down a door in High River. The RCMP broke into homes in High River. Personal [private] property was removed. Albertans need an explanation, and more importantly, they need to know who is responsible for making the decision to break into homes in the first place. Who is responsible for these costs?
