Who is the American Shakespeare? ... Who is the founding poet to whom all subsequent writers must relate? Who established the parameters of the language within or against which all subsequent writers labor? Understood that way, the answer to the question for America isn’t an American at all: It’s William Shakespeare himself. Very much looking forward to devouring this book. If not the man from Stratford himself, is there an artist you would dub the American Shakespeare?
