Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments - TopicsExpress

Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength? “It is I, proclaiming victory, mighty to save.” Why are your garments red, like those of one treading the winepress? “I have trodden the winepress alone; from the nations no one was with me. I trampled them in my anger and trod them down in my wrath; their blood spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing. It was for me the day of vengeance; the year for me to redeem had come. I looked, but there was no one to help, I was appalled that no one gave support; so my own arm achieved salvation for me, and my own wrath sustained me. I trampled the nations in my anger; in my wrath I made them drunk and poured their blood on the ground.” Isaiah 63:-1-6 (NIV) There is no comparable section with this in the Old Testament. Symbolically it depicts Yahweh in blood stained garments, returning from destroying the enemies of His people. We find the initial messianic fulfillment in Matthew 12:22-29 and Colossians 2:15 with the consummation being found in Revelation 19:11-21. These verses have been interpreted in part by commentators in the past as referring to Calvary and the shedding of the blood of the Savior there, but the context clearly shows that the reference to Him is not as a sacrificial Lamb, but as an Avenger, whose garments are stained with the blood of His enemies. The figure here is of the Treader of Grapes, trampling out with His feet the red juice of the grapes in the winepress, as was done in Oriental countries, the juice of the grapes bespattering the garments of the treader. The reference to Bozrah, the ancient capital of Edom, as the point from which the great Judge appears, may signify that from the direction of ancient Edom the glorious sign of the Son of Man will appear in the time of Israel’s direst need. Then again, Edom may be mentioned as a type of the enemies of Israel in the latter days. Edom was always an implacable foe of the Jewish nation. Much life blood will be shed in the awful closing days of this dispensation.
