The joyous expression of their faith seen here is not from the Divine Liturgy, which is the basis and legacy of worship continued for two millennia by these Christians who trace their beginnings to apostolic times. These are Coptic Orthodox Christians in a huge cave church in the southeastern outskirts of Cairo. The ancestors of these joyous Christians received the gospel from the preaching of the Holy Apostle Mark, who brought Christianity to Egypt during the reign of Emperor Nero in the first century, shortly after the Our Lords ascension. Coptic Christians have been persecuted for 13 centuries since the Islamic invasion that swept northern Africa in the 7th and 8th centuries, but most recently during the uprisings of the Islamic Brotherhood that overthrew the Mubarak government in 2011. Communities like this one may soon be in danger of extinction in the same manner as we have seen the ancient Christian communities of Syria and Iraqi wiped out in a matter of a few months. Stand up, Evangelical Christians! Defend your brothers and sisters while there is still time!
