Who speaks for Plan B? Trade Unions Protest at NI Economic Conference, 8:00, 10th September 2013 The Annual Northern Ireland Economic Conference is being held on Wednesday, 10th September 2013 at Titanic Belfast, Queen’s Road, Titanic Quarter, Belfast. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has decided to organise a protest at the event commencing at 8.00 am on Tuesday, 10 September 2012. Yet again there is no trade union speaker at this annual event. That means there will be no alternative approach to the economic and financial crisis articulated at this Conference. The purpose of the protest is to highlight that there is an alternative to the Government’s austerity programme. Our message to those attending this Conference is simple. Start making the case for an alternative economic strategy, for investment in the private sector and public service provision; for decent wages for the employed and adequate benefits for those out of work, whether through employment sickness or disability. This conference could be an opportunity to discuss a future for Northern Ireland that is based on sustainable economic growth and a recovery for hard working families Instead this conference will be used to resurrect the failed economic policies of reckless lending, vulture capitalism and corporate greed The ICTU has been to the fore in proposing an alternative economic model, based on public investment in infrastructure to provide jobs and a sustainable energy future, one based on fair pay for all working families and compassionate welfare for those forced into unemployment. Our proposals require a real and truthful analysis of what went wrong on our economy and an acceptance that real growth can only come about through a fairer and more just economic model. Instead of allowing that vision to be presented, Trade Unions have once again been shut out in favour of the same failed policies proposed by the same discredited establishment.
