Whoa - poker is (weakly) solved! sciencemag.org/content/347/6218/145.full Some highlights from the article: -There are 10^13 information sets, or positions with distinct information, that a computer needs to decide on a move for in Heads-up Limit Holdem -Using CFR (Counterfactual Regret Matching), a bunch of computers iteratively recorded what the right move should have been and build up a database -The authors conclude that their computer strategy is a (not the) Nash Equilibrium - i.e., there is no better unilateral strategy to adopt -Poker is, therefore, weakly solved, because for every position the computer can measure the value of that position and can execute a strategy that achieves it under reasonable circumstances. In fact, the computer does so well that if it plays its worst-case opponent for a human lifetime of poker, it will underperform by 1 milli-big-blind per game only 5% of the time. Love the units Some lessons for human players: -Dealer position is superior -You shouldnt limp (call rather than raise in the first round with a strong hand) -You shouldnt cap (make the final allowed raise as the dealer in the first round) -Generally play more hands and re-raise more often than conventional wisdom
