Whoa, wow, WHOA! I just saw The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and it is one of the best movies of 2013! How come nobody told me that?! Its delightful, visually stunning poignant, profound, human, revealing and deeply inspirational. Reminded me of Stranger Than Fiction and Yes Man, but an even more powerful demonstration of the power of imagination. Awesome soundtrack. Ben Stiller is fantastic in the lead, conveying whimsy and dreaminess, and the adventurous fulfillment of human potential and daydreams. Suceeds as director too. Kristin Wiig is charming and contributes to one of the greatest bits of cinema of last year, with an uplifting cover of Space Oddity in a Greenland karaoke bar. Adam Scott is hilarious with a fake beard and a toolishness we havent seen since Step Brothers. Sean Penn brings a quiet profundity to his small but important role. Patton Oswalt is really sweet as an unlikely human connection Walter makes through tech support. For whatever reason, this one didnt get a lot of attention on its first run. BUT you can now see it, on the cheap, at the Pasadena Dollar Theater. I havent seen the Danny Kaye version, but I will say that I got even more out of Ben Still ers adaptation than I did from James Thurbers wonderful short story. Its one of the funniest movies of the year, a moving celebration of Life, and a breathtaking testament to the human spirit. Dont you just love being surprised by a great movie?
