Whole grains. Eat whole grains. I cant imagine there are too many people in the United States who havent heard you should choose whole grains rather than their overly processed brethren. Ever wondered why? The most well known reason is due to the dietary fiber contained in whole grains. Dietary fiber helps keep us satiated, lose weight, keep us regular, and lowers risk of diabetes and heart disease. Heres a lesser known reason to eat whole grains: Eating processed grains can increase your likelihood of absorbing cadmium which is a toxic heavy metal with a whole host of really bad side effects. Cadmium is known to contaminate whole grains. However, zinc is in the outer covering of grains and zinc reduces the potential of cadmium being absorbed. Alternatively, zinc is lost in grains which are processed into flour and, hence, the chance for cadmium absorption increases when you eat processed grains. So, whenever possible, choose whole grains. Your body will thank you for reducing the amount of cadmium you absorb in your body.
