Whos in the mood for a cartoon? Snafuperman (1944) Snafuperman is an animated short comedy produced by Warner Brothers Pictures, directed by Friz Freleng and written by Abe Liss and Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss). The voice of Pvt. Snafu, the Narrator, and Soldier, Technical Ferry - First Class is provided by Mel Blanc and the Soldier studying the Enemy Identification Chart is Tedd Pierce. Snafuperman is one of 26 black and white Private Snafu cartoons created for the Army-Navy Screen Magazine and shown only to American soldiers. The Private Snafu cartoons were not released commercially, until December 2010. The cartoons title is a play on Superman and parodies the popular Superman (1940s cartoons) of the time. Private Snafu mocks his peers who study, saying that he would rather fight. His guardian angel (1st class with a cigar) grants him the powers and a comical version of a Superman suit, which he promptly uses to create more problems than when he didnt have any powers! The short is one of several satirical takes on Superman produced during World War II. The purpose of the short was to entertain and educate low-literacy enlisted men. Snafu ends up doing the wrong thing because of his refusal to read his field manual. The Private Snafu cartoons have fallen into the public domain and are widely available in free downloads and on unofficial VHS and DVD releases. Many have also been released officially. Snafuperman is a bonus feature on Warner Home Videos Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 3 and the Superman Ultimate Collectors Edition.
