Why Do You Follow Christ? this is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless he is enabled or activated by my Father. John 6:65 At a time when people followed for various reasons and clearly a mixed multitude made up the company of the twelve, it was very necessary for Him to remain on guard. One of the ways Jesus secured Himself was to constantly teach using parables. Parables on the surface seemed like simple stories with mysterious undertones. Actually they were like sound codes that were sent out with such power that they often separated the flock. many times Jesus parables got people to a place of decision and John 6 is no exception. In verse 56, Jesus urged true disciples to feed on His flesh and drink His blood. This direct reference to cannibalism was offensive to many. As Jesus continued, little did they know that He was releasing Divine technology: Sound bites that only those activated by the Father could respond to. What a work of Grace. The funny thing is that even His disciples did not understand Jesus many times, however the key wasnt in understanding...it was in discerning that this is the Man to follow. After Jesus made more shocking statements (read all of John 6), many of the followers stopped following Him and went back to their former associations (v66). Jesus then turns to His disciples and asked a very personal question, ...do you also desire to leave Me?. Peter boldly spoke up on behalf of the Team. He said, To whom shall we go? You (alone) have the Message of Eternal Life! (v68). This simple statement defines discipleship! We follow Christ because He ALONE has the message of Eternal Life. Why do you follow Christ? The earlier parts of the chapter showed that many of the so called disciples had benefited from the miracle of the feeding and clearly were hanging around for more of the largesse! Now Jesus indicated that the largesse involved feeding on His Flesh. They walked away immediately! Again, the question begs an urgent answer...why are you following Christ? Many today like the many that turned away, follow for the blessings. Few, like the Twelve, follow because of the Message of Eternal Life. This simple statement determines why people stay in Church or follow a certain Minister. The disciples stayed because the Message was eternal, but those who left had their eyes on a material and temporal benefit. Which would you rather have? The temporary, or the Eternal? PRAYER CONFESSION In Jesus Name I have life eternal. I confess every inordinate ambition, ungodly obsessions and greed. I receive divine enablement to live willing and obedient. I do not live by sight, I live by faith in the son of God. Amen
