Why Higuain revelations should worry Arsenal fans Is it a case of same old, same old for Arsenal in the transfer window? Real Madrid President Florentino Perez said this week that Arsenal had not submitted a bid for striker Gonzalo Higuain, if that news didn’t make Gunners fans nervous it certainly should have. This was a transfer that was supposed to be finalised weeks ago, it was being reported that the deal was as good as done, now with the transfer window well under way and many top clubs in the market for strikers, Arsenal fans must be wondering why the North London club are dragging their heels. Arsene Wenger has a history of driving a hard bargain when buying and selling players, while trying to be careful with the club’s money is admirable, this transfer window was supposed to be different and perhaps it needs to be. Continuing to keep the net transfer spend to a minimum will not close the gap between Arsenal and last year’s top three, and with each of those clubs having changed managers now maybe the best time for a change in policy. Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis said last month that the club was ready to spend big in this window and with Wenger in the last year of his contract the financial backing he gets may have implications for his future. It all pointed to a big summer for Arsenal and while there can be no doubt that we will see new arrivals at the Emirates this summer, an early marquee signing would’ve put fans in a buoyant mood and sent a message to other potential targets that Arsenal mean business. They have already freed up a lot of money in wages by getting players like Arshavin, Denilson and Squillaci off the books. Having been linked with Rooney, Fellaini, Suarez and Benteke anyone signed below that high standard of player may concern supporters. A fairly repetitive narrative has built around Arsenal during a transfer window. The board make noises that there is money to spend, they get linked with a number of big name players, the window rolls on and when it closes fans are often left underwhelmed by the players who eventually arrive at the club. The first two parts have happened again and Arsenal fans will be hoping the club acts quickly to stop the third taking place.
