Why I LOVE O’Rorke’s Pub. Heres my O’Rorke’s story. Please bear with me. My wife and I planned a driving trip up the east coast in late Oct., 2012. We were to start at Williamsburg, VA, work our way north, and end the trip at Gettysburg for a few days. The weather forecasters were keeping an eye on a developing hurricane dubbed Sandy. The farther north we got, the closer this thing came. The day before our arrival in G-burg, we were tracking the storm and saw the most likely path going right THROUGH the town! Should we turn back? HELL NO! We checked in at the 1863 inn—while everyone else was checking out. Sandy was expected to hit in 2 days. The next morning we got up and were delighted to have a windy battlefield pretty much to ourselves. Then it was time for some lunch. By noon, the entire town was pretty much rolling the streets up. Everything was closed. We walked over to ORorkes and the door was locked, but there was a small crowd of people inside. I stuck my head in a side door and asked if they were open. The owner (A great lady whose name escapes me at the moment) explained that no, they were closed but she was treating her staff to free drinks and a big spread of food before the storm hit the next day. Then she invited us to join them. We did—and had a blast. Free booze and food for 3 hours. We got to know everyone, told them were staying just across the street and that we planned to stick it out. Finally, as everyone was starting to leave, she turns to me, hands me the keys to her restaurant and told me if we need anything at all, feel free to let yourself in and help yourselves to anything you want. WOW—I was floored. I mean, who does something like this in this day and age!? We didnt really need anything as we had already stocked our room with food and a half gallon of vodka. Still—it was an amazing thing to do. O’Rorke’s. Frinkin LOVE the place!
