Why I No Longer Attend Church... Well... first of all, mainly because I no longer believe most of the doctrines they still teach, but its more than that... I think organized support groups are great, and if you need them - you should take advantage of the luxuries of the comradery and fellowship. I personally no longer need that sort of thing, nor am I drawn to contribute to that format of public, doctrine-based gatherings. My support group is my immediate family, my amazing daughter-in-laws, a very special niece, my aunt, my gay cousin, and a handful of extremely-supportive, accepting friends (including some facebook friends). I have found most organized, religion-based support groups to be very valuable up to a certain point, but because they are doctrine based - there is little support or encouragement (or even tolerance) for growing beyond those (quite constrictive) paramiters. It tends to be more of a maintenance program structured as something you will always NEED (and be dependent on) - than a center that promotes your full blossoming and maturity as a powerful, empowering, self-sustained person who is strong and solid and consistent, having found your eternal union with your Source. I actually wish that wasnt the case with organized religion-based support groups, but it is more than clear at this point in my journey that it is. Most clergy members I have met have been some of the most loving, caring, giving, amazing people I have ever met. I sincerely celebrate that there are programs like local churches that help people in many ways, as well as some of the charitable programs they offer for the community, but to think that outgrowing that system is somehow incorrect or ... spiritually-arrogant, or rebellious in nature is just not a fair or accurate assessment of those who have permanently left the church.
