Why I am voting for Alan Howze tomorrow. Friends, as many of you know, this has been an interesting year for me. In July, I had the opportunity to run for office and while I didn’t win, I learned a lot about what it takes to be a candidate and about what kind of leaders I think Arlington needs as we face some serious questions. I know the race for Arlington County Board has generated a lot of interest, and unusual to Arlington, division and strong disagreements over policies and direction. But I have come to believe more than ever that in any election I have to vote for the candidate that I think will lead and represent the values that I hold most dearly. Over the past four months I have been able to watch the campaign for County Board and have watched my friend Alan Howze work hard to learn and listen to his fellow Arlingtonians – I have seen him grow as a candidate, work tirelessly (knocking on thousands of doors), evolve his positions and bring to his candidacy the kind of thoughtfulness, deliberation, and compassion for our community that I will be honored to have represent me on the County Board. This election has generated a lot of emotion and clearly there are real disagreements over policies across the whole spectrum of issues that we face as residents, neighbors, taxpayers, parents, and so on, but I am not supporting Alan just because we agree on the issues (which we do) but because he is the kind of leader that will never stop listening, growing, working and fighting for Arlingtonians from all corners of our County, regardless of background, position, status or address. There is a lot to be done in Arlington and a lot of serious work ahead of us; I am proud to support Alan Howze for County Board and hope you will too. See you at the polls!
