Why Worlds South Africa in 2017? It’s educational WUDC is held to crown the newest team of World Champions. But we believe it has a second, and equally important role in developing and creating the champions of the future. As such, our bid intends to deliver the largest scale training program yet to be seen on the continent of Africa. In partnership with African Voice, the Wits debaters within the organising committee and adjudication core will be putting together a warm up tournament and training camp that will bring together some of the world’s best debaters and judges and some of Africa’s most eager and brightest talents. African Voice is an organisation that was established by alumni of the Monash Association of Debaters, and is led by former World and Australasian Champion Kiran Iyer. In conjunction with local universities and NGO’s, African Voice has to date been able to offer world class training to over 2000 students from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. A member of our adjudication core, Gemma Buckley, along with many other accomplished debaters including Victor Finkel, Fiona Prowse, Nita Rao and Kiran himself, have facilitated training for African Voice. Along with AV, the Wits bid team shares a passion that all students, no matter their background, deserve to experience the transformative power of debate. It’s educational Over the next two years, the team intends to work closely with a local advisory board, including many former AV students, to develop a training curriculum and materials for the camp. There will also be collaboration on sourcing sponsorship for the event. With the previous successes of African Voice in securing financial support for training programs, and the unique opportunity offered by the hosting of WUDC in Africa, we are confident in securing funding for this event and intend to make it freely accessible to all African students. Its South African location allows many universities, even some who may not be attending WUDC, to take advantage of this opportunity. Staffed by members of the adjudication core, the African Voice team, and subsidised judges, we believe that this experience will contribute to the growth of the African debate circuit and ensure debate becomes sustainable across the continent long after the end of Worlds 2017.
