Why a professional Beta Reader? I can get a Beat Reader any time for free, so why pay for a professional? Any reader can give you feedback on how your manuscript is going, but their comments may not go much further than “I like this character because he was funny” or “This event was exciting”. This certainly helps, but does not give you a deep insight into your work. A professional can tell you in detail why something works or doesn’t, what you could do to fix what isn’t working, how different audiences are likely to receive it, whether you have left dimensions out that could enhance your work, and possible new directions plot and characters could take. An author friend may be able to help with some of these details, but they are often tempted to try to get you to write ther story how they would. You need to develop your own style. Of course you are the author and make the final decisions.
