Why are We the Greater Ashland Lions Club? Ashland Lioness Club chartered in 1979 with 33 Members (33-K) from Ashland, Hopkinton, Holliston, Framingham, sponsored by Ashland Lions Club (Lioness were Auxiliary of the Lions). Joanne Sistrand (a business woman owner of Tiny Tot Nursery School) believed women should have a vote (Lioness did not). In 1989 when International said women could be LIONS and that Lioness would be phased out....Joanne died of a brain tumor before the dream of becoming a LION (she was district Lioness Chairperson, equivalent of District Governor). The Lioness Club was approached by Ellie Torelli (Assistant District Lioness Chairperson) to become a Lions Club. Some members said NO and others said WHY NOT. On June 17, 1993 upstairs in the America Legion Hall the first meeting for those interested in being a Lions Club was held. Forty women attended and of those who attended, thirty-seven said they would be Lions. On this night a President, Secretary and Treasurer were voted in. The rest is History. The Greater Ashland Lions (GALS...Mary Lou Hunt came up with the name) we were the ONLY Women Lions Club in the district. On June 21, 1993 International declared the Greater Ashland Lions a Club. The charter remained open for 69 days, meanwhile fundraising started with enthusiastic and eager members working....TOGETHER. On July 20, 1993 the Lioness Club disbanded after 13 years 9 months. With members joining a Lions Club in their communities (of the 49 members, 10 became Greater Ashland Lions). Charter Night was October 22, 1993 with 43 members being inducted. We are all Lions making a difference and WE SERVE.
