Why are we photographers obsessed with likes on our page. Oh if your not then this probably isnt for you. No doubt you are the minority. Its late and I cant sleep. When I cant sleep my mind wonders. Why are we obsessed with the numbers? I mean why are we? Do how many likes say your better than another? More popular? More likely to get hired? Mm mm mm . Lets rewind to when I first set up my precious posh photography page. A year and half ago. I would look at other pages and see 5000 likes, 10,000 likes, 24,000 likes and just think wow that must be so cool. They must be so awesome. Notice I equated likes to how good they must be. Oh first big mistake... Oh come on if your human you know you did it too. Wink wink. In some strange way we then began to equate the numbers of likes on our page equalling how good we are or how good that other photographer must be. Problem though begins... that cycle. Almost a vicious cycle. How do I get alot of likes. Oh you know you have been there. If not then once again your that special Minority and God Bless you. So what do those likes mean to you? Is a simple fundamental need to be accepted. We all have the inate desire to want to be liked. Facebook ...you get a like. Click ...you liked the page. Isnt that saying hey I like you. Hey I believe in you. Hey I accepted you. So yes Facebook itself has set up a way to make us feel more or less about ourself. The reason I am talking about this is so you dont. Dont fall into the vicious cycle of how many likes you have. It really doesnt mean anything in the grand theme of things. Most people will like your page and never follow it because unless your selling something, sharing something they can learn from and or doing giveaways ...the like on your post will be slim. Sad I know. But it is what is. Does not mean your not awesome at what you do. That your work isnt fantastic, Cause so many of you are the most amazing at what you do I have been privileged and honored to see. The worst is when we compare our page likes to others. Dont.. some of the most amazing artist seem to have the least likes. Yet some with the most likes just happened to do something at that right moment to gain a zillion likes. But that makes you no less as awesome as them in your art. Never doubt your work because you have low number likes. It just means people dont know about you. Or worst the photography world is seriously filled with some catty insecure people that do not want you to be a hit. Oh we all know this no doubt exist. My long saga point... Believe in you no matter the number on your page. Second. .. If another fellow photographer ask you to like their page. However they managed to come to you to ask you to like their page. Click it. Like it. Help them feel liked. Show them love when you can. Support them because we our all on the same journey. We all want to feel liked. We all want to feel accepted. Each image we take and edit we put a piece of ourselves in it. So love us. Not hate us.... you can always choose not to follow their page. But goodness sake like their page. Because for whatever reason we do love our likes. ( we shouldnt but who is kidding who... we do) I checked with Facebook they said their is no cut off for likes. Just know this for those of you trying to build likes on your page. Most of you are as good as those with 20,000 likes. You are amazing... believe in you.
