Why beta carotene is orange? Beta carotene has delocalized 11 - TopicsExpress

Why beta carotene is orange? Beta carotene has delocalized 11 carbon- carbon double bonds conjugated together. The more delocalization there is, the smaller the gap between highest energy pi bonding orbital and the lowest energy pi anti – bonding orbital. To promote an electron in the case of beta carotene takes less energy. Lesser the energy means lesser the frequency hence higher the wavelength. Beta carotene absorbs in a large range but particularly strongly in the visible region between about 470nm. It absorbs in blue region causing us to see yellow – orange colors. (Idea of complementary colors)
