Why do Bad Things Happen to Good People? That’s a plausible question, one that has been pondered through the years and is worthy of a reply. I feel it necessary to start with a statement that will be offensive to many: “there is none that doeth good, no not one.” (Romans 3:12) Right before that verse in Romans 3:10, it says this, “There is none righteous, no not one.” A few verses later in Romans 3:23 it says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. I would encourage you to read Romans 3:10 – 23 to read the entire context. Man’s problem is that we compare ourselves to one another which is not the measuring tape. II Corinthians 10:12 says such a mindset and action is not wise. The truth is, I am compared to the “glory of God” according to Romans 3:23. Now if I compare myself to you, I might find myself to be somewhat “good”, but when I put myself, my actions, my thoughts, my heart, and my life beside the LORD, I suddenly find myself coming up far short. Interestingly, that is why the Bible says that the religious elite desired to crucify the LORD Jesus. It describes it this way in John 3:19 – 20 “And this is the condemnation, that Light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than Light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the Light, neither cometh to the Light, lest their deeds should be reproved.” If you want to see the dirt, turn on the light. That’s what happened when Jesus arrived: the Light was turned on and the hypocritical self-righteous crowd no longer looked so righteous. They lost their appeal in the sight of the people, and with it, their power and control. Things haven’t changed. Let me give you 6 reasons that bad things happen to “good” people. 1.THE CURSE: Adam and Eve chose disobedience and its consequences in the Garden of Eden. They did it knowing that their choice would bring death and dying. Since then, all men are in the state of dying, and consequently, are mortal and are decaying away. No matter how hard we fight this truth, it has never been thwarted, and it never will until Jesus returns and reverses the curse. Until then, hurricanes will come and will blow on the evil and the good alike (Matthew 5:45). 2.LIFESTYLE CHOICES: Scripture has given us rules by which to conduct life. When people choose to live outside those rules, the consequences are evident. Drink to excess and you have a high likelihood of heart disease and liver disease. If you choose to smoke cigarettes, chances are good that you will have lung problems as a result. Walk in front of a car and it will hurt you. Goodness will not prevent these consequences. 3.SATAN: Jesus in describing Satan described him in this fashion: “The thief (Satan) cometh not but for to kill, to steal, and to destroy…” (John 10:10). Each of us have experienced his actions upon this world to some degree or another. If you want, read the book of Job to get a good picture of what Satan did to a “good” man. 4.DISOBEDIENCE AND SIN: Hebrews 12:6 is very clear that when God’s children walk in disobedience and sin, they will be chastised as a result. God is the best of Fathers and knows that sin unchecked will lead to consequences far worse than His chastisement. I Corinthians 11:29 – 30 lets us know clearly that if we partake of communion with unconfessed sin in our lives, the results will be bad. Sin is evil and has bitter consequences: always has and always will. 5.THAT GOD MIGHT BE GLORIFIED: Evil has the potential for an incredible testimony. When the committed follower of Jesus goes through the fires of life and allows Christ to be seen in the fire, the world takes note. Read about Shadrach, Meshech, and Abednego in Daniel 2. It is an incredible story of God being glorified in a very evil situation. 6.GENERATIONAL SIN: If no other cause should make one reconsider their actions, this one should. No person is an island. When a person chooses to walk in a lifestyle with repercussions, the repercussions very rarely stop with the individual. Sadly, the persons most likely affected by the sin of a parent is the children. Scripture says that the “sins of the fathers will be visited upon the fourth and fifth generation.” People want to say that God is unfair in this, when the blame lies with the perpetrator. The reason so many generations are affected is because the average lifespan will cause a person to be alive and viewed by that number of generations. The good news is that the righteous actions of parents will likewise affect four to five generations. The choice is ours. This is a brief synopsis of why bad things happen to good people.
