Why do I need to give up my flat if I want to sustain my retirement? The government says it wants to improve the lives of older folk like me, but I don’t think it is sincere about it. My husband has now passed on, and I stay alone in this flat now with those memories. They are all I have. All the memories of when we worked hard to build a life for ourselves and to raise our children. The live on, even after my husband has gone, and my children have left. Even If I have to go hungry, I will not sell off my flat. The government’s Lease-Buyback Scheme, I will never follow. I want to die in my home, not somewhere where I have no attachment to. Already at 66, I am still working to provide for myself. Is it too much to ask to live and die in the one place I cherish? Not everything is about dollars and cents, and not everybody can be quantified as another statistic.
