It is not that God needs it but that He is interested in our piety. Sacrifice of ram during the Hajj period is to emulate what Abraham the freind of God and our father, the father of righteouness did, when he was to sacrifice his son Ishmael and a ram was provided for him instead of the son he was to sacrifice, and he took the ram and did his sacrifice. Muslims are command to follow the religion of father Abraham in all its ramification because Abraham did not worship the Golder Calf as the Jews did during the time of Moses, nor did he took Jesus Christ as his Lord and Personal saviour, but the Quran says that he surendered himself to the Almighty God in Islam. Again, sacrificing animals does not mean that islam does not recognise animals rights, the prophet (pbuh) commands the muslims when ever they are to slaughter any animal to do so in a proper way and not cause unncessary sufferings on them as such one is expected to sharpen his knife and not to strangle animal to death..etc
