Why do we (humans) need heroes and myths? Why did our ancestors - TopicsExpress

Why do we (humans) need heroes and myths? Why did our ancestors create such epic heroes as Adu Ogyinae, Theseus, Heracules, and Perseus? Why do we look up to people like Krishna, Pythagoras, Buddha and Jesus? Because we know were less than perfect. And were always seeking perfection, searching for someone who can do it better than we can. Somebody who can be an example to us for what we can do, what we can be. Thats why stories of the prevailing hero, holy men, and all-powerful gods with dominion over evil is considered vital by so many people. Among other reasons (theres many, this isnt a reductio statement), these ideas offer hope, a deliverance from our perceived unworthiness (a fallacious and insidious notion, IMO), and an example of being more than we alone think we cannot achieve. But it is not so. We, ourselves, are more than conquerors. We do not need the dictates of text with an imagined sacred source to tell us this. Such power comes from within. It only needs to be internally discovered, unchained and channeled. When thinking on such things as the prototypical hero, mythos which grants us hope and the ethos which shapes such belief, attempt to tease out the underpinnings of the psychology which cognizes and reveres such archetypes. They are only necessary in the mind of those who cannot see beyond the craft or creator they created themselves.
