Why is Carlos Celdran being marketed as the poster boy for Freedom of Speech? His defenders proclaim hurting religious feelings is not enough reason to convict, and I agree; what they CONVENIENTLY OMIT is how he committed the offense: IN A PLACE OF WORSHIP. Now, if you are perfectly fine with a costumed hooligan barging into your church in the middle of service with a placard, screaming rudely at the congregation, then we have no argument. But if you have even the slightest appreciation of the struggle, throughout history, to express ideas, to dissent, to question religion and to mock authority, then you would not dare equate the fight for our most precious of liberties with such a crass publicity stunt. Many heroic lives were lost to give us and future generations a voice against tyranny and theocracy; this is why I value and uphold my right to Freedom of Speech. I will not have those achievements cheapened and debased by one ill-advised attempt at protest performance art. Some people see Celdrans irreverent grandstanding as an example of how to fight for your rights; all hes really demonstrated is how to abuse, pervert and undermine the essence of Freedom of Speech.
