Why is the media trying to spin Petersons parenting and the use of spankings as a racial and cultural issue!? Come on people, we know that in the Southern states, this is a pervasive conservative Christian belief and practice where the mantra of spare the rod, spoil the child still lives on. Lets stop placing blame on individual cultures and broaden the scope to include where these parenting beliefs come from. Then, lets work to establish education and training for parenting that goes beyond open ended ranges for use of physical punishment for discipline. Pain and fear based compliance for behavioral change are very effective in discipline (although not advocated by current developmental psychologists) . . . but when parents harm their children in the process, who is to blame for the outcomes?
