Why is this important? It has to do with the perception of safety. When normal folks feel safer to ride a bicycle on a protected bicycle lane, they are more likely to ride a bicycle. Qualitative surveys continue to show that people feel much more safe when bike lanes have a buffer from vehicle traffic. Both SFMTA and NITC’s studies show that 98% of people biking feel safer with the protected bicycle lanes.
