Why should we work for strength in Yoga postures? • Strengthening happens through muscles. Muscles support & stabilise the skeletal system. Without muscles skeleton is jittery / rattly & cannot function. Yogasanas can give medium to huge strength depending on need & practice. • INVERSIONS are specific only to Yogic culture. Without them Yoga loses definition. Tradition & modern research have suggested that INVERSIONS will give maximum benefits only after a few minutes of holding them. We know that unless upper & core body are strong & toned we cannot hold INVERSIONS even for a few seconds. • All nerves flow through the spine. These then flow out to different parts of body & organs. If spine is weak it starts affecting healthy nervous flow [body to brain & vice versa]. These nervous currents are like the software of human life. • All esoteric & spiritual Yogic practices [Kundalini, chakras, Pranayama…] are done through / with the spine. Most of our normal lives are spent using the spine in some unhealthy way. Thus a strong spine & related muscle group is not only of physical but spiritual significance. • Yogasana is practiced traditionally only to prepare a Sadhaka for the internal journey [ANTARANGA SADHANA] of Yoga i.e. Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana & spiritual journey [ANTARATMA SADHANA] i.e. Dhyana & Samadhi. • Here a Sadhaka needs to sit in a meditative asana [Lotus, Accomplished, Thunderbolt, Hero, Swastikasana etc.] for long hours & sometimes Days - to reach his goals. If his body is not trained & toned in Yogasana for strength [& of course suppleness], how will he be able to sit in the aforesaid Asanas? • Yoga says body is the temple in which the God [Self] resides. If the temple is weak & crumbling will a devotee feel devotion & the needed emotion to reach the God in the Sanctum sanctorum within?... Your thoughts Yogis…..?
