Why should you consider taking classes from an independent - TopicsExpress

Why should you consider taking classes from an independent educator? You may be asking yourself why it is a good idea to pay for classes when your hospital offers free classes. Well, lets take a look at what may be offered in a free hospital-based class. The classes must be fairly generic or basic because they must be appropriate for every educational level and may be tailored to hospital policy and preferences. This may mean that the obstetric physician groups with the largest practices may dictate what is taught or more importantly, what is NOT taught in classes. So if you are wanting something a bit different, you may be discouraged or not find that your chosen option is taught or practiced in class. Ask what childbirth philosophy the classes are based on. In San Antonio- that answer may be hard to come by since most hospital programs require that their educators are certified or working toward their certification to be employed, but that might be any available certifying organization and may vary by individual educator. Childbirth and breastfeeding classes in the hospital setting may be provided as a marketing tool or as part of the requirements for Baby Friendly Designation, but there are no guidelines on quality of the classes offered. Classes are usually large with as many as 15 or more moms registered per class. A lot of PowerPoint lecture may be involved with little time left for practice of techniques that will help you in labor. I believe that you and your baby deserve more. You deserve classes taught by an experienced educator who teaches evidence-based information based on a well known childbirth education philosophy that you can investigate to make sure it is right for you, such a #Lamaze International. I believe that you should hear about the benefits and risks of all options available for labor and birth no matter where you choose to birth your baby. I believe that you deserve to have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss controversial topics and have lots of practice time. You can learn a lot from the internet or reading books, but classes should allow time for group and individual practice of techniques because you cant get that without an educator who has the experience and the freedom to individualize class content and techniques to the members of the class. I believe that this birth is something that you will only get to experience one time and that it will have a lasting effect on you, your baby and your family, so you deserve the best. I invite you to check out Lamaze International website to learn more about our philosophy. Then check our burthyourwaysa to explore some fun options for birth and breastfeeding classes, birthing multiples, and assistance with learning the risks and benefits of options and creating a functional birth plan.
