Wild Welfare have recently returned from Cape Town in South Africa, where we were carrying out a Welfare Assessment of Butterfly World. It presented a bit of a change for Wild Welfare as Butterfly World is an accredited member of the Pan-African Association of Zoos and Aquaria (PAAZA). The facility requested a welfare audit as part of their commitment to the highest possible standards of husbandry and welfare for the animals under their care. The Wild Welfare assessment methodology worked very well in that whilst it was originally designed to identify instances of poor welfare and the causes of such, it also is able to reinforce instances of high standards of animal welfare. The audit did show up some minor areas that require tweaking but by and large the provision of animal care at this facility is of a very high standard.
