Will a urine test say goodbye to the traditional pap smear ? A new - TopicsExpress

Will a urine test say goodbye to the traditional pap smear ? A new study is looking at replacing a lot of pap smears with a simple , non-invasive urine test. The urine test would screen for human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cervical cancers in some cases. They found that under certain conditions, the urine test was accurate, though not as accurate as the pap smear, for HPV detection. Obviously this test is not near ready for prime time so the traditional pap will continue. As we move toward tests, such as MRI, where the physician does not examine the patient, we will miss the opportunity to diagnose other diseases. We now use a urine test to check for STDs in young women whom we do not examine at their contraceptive visit.
