Will you watch the big race? Have you heard any of the background stories for this years Derby horses? Check this out Boston fans: coxsportsonline/2014/05/derby-horse-has-wicked-strong-boston-tie/ When the gates open on Saturday for the 140th running of The Kentucky Derby, Bostonians will have a bit more riding on this year’s Run for The Roses than just a few greenbacks. Leaving from post position #20 will be Wicked Strong. His owners, Centennial Farms in Beverly, Mass., wanted to do something to honor and help the victims of the last year’s Boston Marathon bombing. The Farm’s owner, Don Little., Jr. wanted to name his promising colt Boston Strong, but that name was already taken. In addition, Little pledged to donate 1% of the horse’s earnings to the One Fund (equating to some $7,000 to date). During the Triple Crown races, that number will increase to 5%. With the Derby purse of $2 million on the line, the city of Boston will surely have a horse to root for.
