Collins Fight may be at an end. As you all know Collin - TopicsExpress

Collins Fight may be at an end. As you all know Collin had a very rough Tuesday morning when his heart had stopped and the medical team spent 15 min resuscitating him. The doctors called during this time and you can only imaging our concern. The doctors didn’t think that he was going to pull through after his third shot of epinephrine, but Collin plays by his rules and woke up and said “just kidding I am ok know”. Of course Jen and I drove the 160 miles as quick as we could to get up to see him. Then on Friday we received another phone call at 0400 telling us there was another problem. Jen and I again rushed back up to the hospital to see what was going on. Basically very early in the morning around 0200 Collin was unable to properly oxygenate his blood. His saturations were between 45 and below 60. To put in perspective they want him between 92 and 98. When Jen and I got to the hospital we immediately picked him up. His lips were blue, his skin was pale white and cold, and his eyes had even changed color. This went on for hours. That’s when the doctors sat us down and laid down the worst news I have every received. Collins blood gases came back horrible with C02 levels over 150 which is of the charts and and PH level that is just unsustainable for human life. Collin was losing his fight. The doctors explained that Collin does not have a chance for survival and it is now just a matter of time before he passes. Collin is currently maxed out ventilator settings that cannot be set any higher. Collin is also very heavily sedated to the point were he doesn’t wake up for more then a few seconds. The doctors cannot give us a time line on Collins life and said Collin may have a few hours or a few days. They said removing life support is always an option. This is absolutely tearing Jen and I up. We can see Collin is very much suffering at this point and there appears to be no hope. However Collin has shown us miracles before and Jen and I just were not ready to give up on Friday. We did however ask that we take him in to a sleep room and spend the night with him. That way if he passed he passed in our arms. That night something special happened, his saturation came back up and he started getting his color back. I asked for a blood gas and the doctors said it would not do any good because there was no room to go up on the vent setting. I explained I just wanted to see if he his CO2 and PH got any better. They agreed and to there amazement Collins CO2 dropped so much it was almost to good and his PH level was perfect. The doctors were dumb founded. However the good news was only short lived as expected because a few hours later his CO2 was back in the 100s. The hart wrenching decision we are facing is, do we let Collin keep on suffering the way he is, or do we let him keep fighting knowing that he is capable of baffling doctors. I asked the doctors, how can you be so sure that he doesn’t have any more fight, you have told this to us multiple times before and Collin shocked you? There only response was, Patrick this time it is much different. That is when it really sunk in and my heart was ripped from my chest. I sat there and listened to everything that was wrong over and over before it finally sunk in. I asked them, how is the poor kid even oxygenating his blood. There answer, we are really not to sure, to be honest it is actually quit amazing. To list just the things that are wrong, Collin has sever pulmonary hypoplasia, chronic lungs dieses, trachealmalasia, bronchialmalasia, a pulmonary hemorrhage, and pneumonia. Jen and I are spending every last second we can with this little miracle that has taught us so much about love. No parent ever wants to give up on his or her child and no parent every wants to watch their child suffer. Right now Jen and I are being asked to pick one of the two. Jen and I will do our best to decide what is best for Collin and hope we make the right decision. I truly hope that Collin answers for us and shows us something spectacular again. Thank you every one for fowling our story through the good times and the bad. I hope there are still a lot more stories to come.
