William Day Some of us can remember when things were different a copper had his own beat and knew the public who he / she served. If you got caught scrumping you would get a clip around the ear, and if the copper told your mum / dad you would get another clip round the ear. Policemen were seen as fair and they would often act like a guardian for the youngsters to steer them right and they made every effort to chat with the community on a friendly basis. Nowadays police remark “I am not a social worker” the truth is they are not many things these days. The police have lost their way in the community and I wonder if this is not part of the problem with joint enterprise? When has a copper ever stood up for one of these kids, let alone said to their sergeant I know this boy and he is not a violent lad and joint enterprise or not it just doesn’t fit! That is not to say that that is always the case, but sometimes it is and the police do not stand up for these young boys.J.F.J.T
