Wiltshire-based New Zealander Lizzie Brown won last weekend’s CIC2* class at the Reverdy Brightling Park International Horse Trials, beating off stiff competition from seasoned professionals such as Sir Mark Todd and Zara Phillips. Last year’s CIC1* winner, American Lis Halliday-Sharp came second and Frenchman Gilles Pons third. Now in its 27th year, the hugely popular two-day event on 13 and 14 July is highly revered throughout the eventing world and attracts top riders from across the globe. Lizzie, who is just 25 years old, achieved a respectable dressage score of 40.9 before going double clear showjumping and cross-country. Her 13-year old chestnut Hanoverian gelding, named Henton Attorney General, was shipped over to the UK last year, after he won three CIC3*. Lizzie commented that she’d be back to compete at Brightling Park again next year. “The cross country was big and bold. Many of the fences were quite old fashioned, which I liked, there weren’t many skinny fences or corners to jump. It is a great galloping course and suited my horse very well.” Lizzie went home with £500 and 500kg of Reverdy Horsefeed. Gloucestershire-based Chris Hall won the CIC* class on board Kings Advocate II, a Thoroughbred aged just six years old and his first ever one star competition. Chris applauded the organisers for putting on such a well-run event. “Brightling Park is a five hour drive for us, but it was most definitely worth it. The atmosphere is relaxed, but the event is seamless and expertly executed.”
