Wimbledon 2014 is fast approaching with the tournament kicking off - TopicsExpress

Wimbledon 2014 is fast approaching with the tournament kicking off tomorrow, running from the 23rd June - 6th July. I will be focusing my attention on the ladies singles tournament this year, giving my thoughts, updates and match reports as the tournament progresses. I will also be uploading a full chart with all the matches and winners for the ladies singles, so watch out for that to easily follow how everyone has done each round. So, with the tournament building Wednesday 18th June saw the seeds announced for the Championship and the Ladies singles are as follows: 1. Serena Williams (USA) 2. Na Li (CHN) 3. Simona Halep (ROU) 4. Agnieszka Radwaska (POL) 5. Maria Sharapova (RUS) 6. Petra Kvitova (CZE) 7. Jelena Jankovic (SRB) 8. Victoria Azarenka (BUR) 9. Angelique Kerber (GER) 10. Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) 11. Ana Ivanovic (SRB) 12. Flavia Pennetta (ITA) 13. Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) 14. Sara Errani (ITA) 15. Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP) 16. Caroline Wozniaki (DEN) 17. Samantha Stosur (AUS) 18. Sloane Stephens (USA) 19. Sabine Lisicki (GER) 20. Andrea Petkovic (GER) 21. Roberta Vinci (ITA) 22. Ekaterina Makarova (RUS) 23. Lucie Safarova (CZE) 24. Kristen Flipkins (BEL) 25. Alice Cornet (FRA) 26. Anastasia Pavlyuchekova (RUS) 27. Gabrine Muguruza (ESP) 28. Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) 29. Sorana Cirstea (ROU) 30. Venus Williams (USA) 31. Klara Koukalova (CZE) 32. Elena Vesnina (RUS) Sadly no British interest in the seeded list after Emily Webley-Smith and Gabi Taylor failed to make it through qualifying rounds. Although I am extremely pleased for Romanias Simona Halep who appears to have come from the depths of the list right up to be seeded at number three. A very exciting young player and definitely one to watch. This year the BBC are making Wimbledon available to watch live across BBC TV, Red Button, radio, mobile and BBC Sport app. You will also be able to watch online via the BBC Sport Website, or BBC iplayer. So no excuse to miss out on any of the action! Friday 20th June saw the draw for the order of play and in a very exciting turn of events, if both players make it through all their rounds, Serena Williams will have to take on Maria Sharapova in the quarter finals. What an exciting game that would be, both players very keen to take the title this year. It has been ten years since Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon, but after winning the French Open she once again has her eyes on the prize. The Russian player is one of the highest earning female athletes with her mix of income and numerous sponsorship deals. Her Wimbledon bid starts against the British Wildcard, Samantha Murray, and with the possible quarter final clash with Serena Williams, this is going to be an exciting tournament for her, and I think this might possibly be her year. Serena Williams gave a very brief press conference on Saturday 21st June, where she dealt with the issues of her recent losses claiming she is not over it but is ready and excited to be Wimbledon. The whole press conference was over within ten minutes, but Williams usually deals with defeat by coming on stronger, so is Wimbledon going to be the tournament to take her out of this funk?
