Wines of France 30/09/14 Our next tasting is based on the wines of France. We shall be looking closely at the southern regions of france. They offer fantastic wines at great prices. They are now far superior to the wines of S.America and Australia especially in reds Domaine Mas Barrau Cabernet Franc, Pays du Gard has gone organic. It’s still oozing with fantastic fruit and luscious aromas… but now it’s got the right to call itself ‘organic’ too! The ECOCERT logo will be included on the back label – a guarantee that it has converted to organic principles of viticulture and winemaking for this wine. We attended a tasting recently and were very impressed by these wines from St Chinian made by Clos Bagatelle. These brilliant wines offer something a little bit different – I was standing next to a customer at a recent event and when he put the glass to his nose he exclaimed “WOW!!”… then he followed with words to the following effect “Wow in the fact that whatever I’m smelling, it’s fantastic and now I can’t wait to taste it” type wow!… and I can assure you he wasn’t disappointed as he swirled the liquid around his mouth and nodded his head in appreciation. So, we’ve introduced 4 wines (2 red + 2 white) to our portfolio. Clos Bagatelle is located North of Béziers in the Languedoc countryside around the wild and beautiful area of Saint Chinian. It’s a beautiful part of the world with fantastic mountainous ranges and gorges (I know this as I’ve just spent 2 weeks around this area whilst on my motor biking holiday and the scenery, roads, smells and wines are really fantastic!). This 60 hectare property has been producing wine here since 1632… so they’ve had a bit of time to prove their worth! Boutinot have added a new Rhone wine to their collection another Cairanne called Les Six. In an appellation often dominated by just two varieties, ‘Les Six’ is a new style of Cairanne which, due to the ancient varieties of Carignan Noir, Cinsault and Counoise included in the assemblage, is also a Cairanne whose heart holds dear the traditions of yesteryear. 2011 is the first vintage of ‘Les Six’ and is exuberantly and lusciously fruity: the six grape varieties each bring nuances of aromas and ripples of texture which fill the palate with wells of depth and propel the plump flavours to a finish which is warming, smooth and immediately appealing. Another new wine is a Grenache from the French part of Catalan. Exhilarating from the start. A perfume that is intense, sweet and heady, sprinkled with soft spices, draws the senses into a palate brimming with lush fruit, made tender, silky and smooth by the faintest touch of French oak. A lovely, warm, brambly and dense Grenache Noir from the deep south of France. The 2 whites from Clos Bagatelle are extreme opposites. The first is fresh aromatic white that is delightful, the second has been wood aged and is a rich powerful white more than capable of partnering scallops etc. We also have a gentle aromatic Pinot blanc grown on granitic soils that has given the wine an extra dimension. Then to blow you away. Probably my favourite white wine a Savennieres, using Chenin blanc from the Loire. We really think that France has learnt from her errors or arrogance and is now producing quality wines at reasonable prices, So please come along and try them. Places are £10 and have to be reserved by contacting us.
