Winged Royalty … Queen butterfly nectaring on a native Beggar’s-tick wildflower along Lighthouse Road at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge near Tallahassee, Florida. Queens resemble Monarch butterflies in various ways, but are smaller and the color of their wings is a darker chestnut-brown. They can be found ranging from Brazil to Florida and the Gulf Coast. Their preferred habitats are open, sunny areas, including fields, deserts, roadsides, pastures, dunes, washes and waterways. They are known to migrate like the Monarchs, but to a lesser extent.
